When I was serving in the British Army , I had the pleasure of being posted to Kowloon, Hong Kong. I then discovered the delights of real Chinese or should I say Cantonese food.
This of us who have eaten the delights for the local Chinese takeaway enjoy chinese food what has been altered for the local tastes, So i was surprised that some of the food ~I ate in the UK was nothing lie the real version in Hong Kong
Please bare with me talking about chinese food, and the blog id about Thailand food, but you will see the link later
First, I need to explain an incorrect assumption of the local chinese food and restaurants. A lot of the restaurants and cooks are from Hong Kong, and therefore Cantonese, as Hong Kong is hit the province of Canton, so the are cantonese, and do not speak Mandarin ( The main language off China) ( Cantonese has 7 tones while Mandarin has 4) however that do still live in the country of Thailand, so are chinese but they are very proud of being cantonese. Like being a Yorkshireman and an Englishman.
So, lets get back to the point, when I was on patrol in Kowloon, ( I was a RoyalMilitary Policeman, so patrolled the province ) we would have a local Royal Military Policeman to act as a guide and translator, so it was because of this, I discovered , with the assistance of my local colleague, the local breakfast called “Congee”
Congee , is a rice soup or porridge, with a protein added to add taste. I was told that most of my european colleagues did not like Congee, but O would have it every day, with pork. I even tried making meh own version when I returned to the Uk, but I was not very successful
So, when my wonderful wife make me the Thai breakfast called Khao Tum, it brought me back to Kowloon . It was similar to the cantonese but in the Thai version had an egg in the middle . Congee may have had an eg but I do not recall there being one.
I have done some research of khao tum and there are lots off different versions some looking really nic some not so, but I would guess all delicious.
The dish , is rice, in a wonderful soup, some are more thicker than others, and in the Khao Tum, you can have pork, chicken or whatever is available. Like a lot of asian foods, it is a breakfast dish, but you can eat it any time of the day, I have even had ( Gaeng Khiew Baan) thai green curry for breakfast here . No waste.
So when you visit the land of smiles ( Once this Virus is behind us) please try the local Thai Breakfast , Khao Tum.
