One of the things I am proud of this year is my success in growing plants in my garden . I have tried to grow plants. And fruits of many kinds last year , but I was not very successful, but this year, armed with a hand full of seeds from the UK, I tried again.
Now, one of the things about bringing seeds from the UK and planting them here, is, well of course the weather. Now , the advantage being in Chiang Mai, is, I don’t need a green house and the chances of a frost is , zero.
I have also got Thai seeds I buy from the local supermarkets etc and most of them do start to grow,
So this year , due to trial and error, I have manage to get a lot of plants to grow and hopefully have a little; garden where we can pick and choose what to eat.
The thing about Thailand, is that chemicals are used a lot to help grow and fight insects, and unlike the UK, they do not have to make sure they are cleaned before selling. You also have to understand that a lot of farmers sell they produce directly , in a local market or small stall. So it is always advised to wash your veggies before eating or cooking them
The good thing about growing your own stuff, you know wheat has been used and they , well mine are organic.
So this year I have been looking at the plants and seeing how they cope, some do not like the direct sunlight, som like the shade, some like it in the shade when they are seedlings.
This year I have grown, cucumbers and Pak Choy, and they have been great and now I have a second batch on the go now. I have about 4 – 5 different types of chilli’s on the go too and I am not sure if I will see them with fruit before I go back to the Uk in about 2 months time. The good thing is they will be nice and strong them I return.
I have water melon , Brussel sprout, aubergine tomatoes and beans and peas on the go too, 2 mango trees and a lychee tree and 2 kaffir lime treess, The beans and peas will grow fast and when I go I will be putting the aubergine and Brussel sprout into pots as well. I have put coriander, horny and sweet basil, also are doing well.
In the UK , if you are good at growing, they say you have green fingers, I found out that in Thailand they saying is “Cold Hands”
